A Happy New Year from Your Local Logs

Seasoned Firewood – Beech Logs

It’s been a hard autumn and winter with the amount of rainfall we have experience here in the Southwest, but we are already noticing the days are getting longer and the increased wildlife activity in our woodland on the Blackdown Hills, located on the Devon and Somerset border. The forecast is for cold, and dry – long overdue, but very welcome.

The wet weather has made it especially hard to season our hardwood logs, as seasoning , making the wood logs ready to burn, is done by air drying over a period of time in the right conditions. We season our wood outside until it has an internal moisture content of between 20-25%. Newly felled wood can contain up to 45% moisture.

Our hardwood supply is currently beech wood. This burns well when seasoned, giving a bright light and good heat. We believe that beech is a natural and sustainable choice for domestic fuel, warming your home environmentally. When we burn wood we are releasing solar energy in the form of heat from the chemical energy of the wood, and by burning the wood, it releases no more greenhouse gases than if it were to be left to rot on the forest floor. You should aim to burn your logs in the right way, which is a clean hot burn, using seasoned logs and an efficient log boiler, log burner or fireplace, creating minimal smoke, thus creating less pollution.

Beech is great for wildlife. Lots of animals live in the hollows of beech trunks and beechnuts are eaten by every type of animal in the woods. It has been an attractive sight in our native woodland for centuries. During the great storms of 1987 thousands of mature beech trees were felled. In their place other species, often fast growing trees like sycamore and ash have taken over beech woods, and a lack of management has prevented a restocking of these fine trees. By buying your firewood from us, you can be assured that the beech wood is from a sustainable source, and that re-planting is taking place within the Southwest to replenish beech wood supplies.

We will where possible deliver you ‘dry’ seasoned wood, if your logs happen to be wet on the outside, this is not an indication of unseasoned firewood, but the fact that we have had to load or deliver in the wet, something  beyond our control. Store your logs in an airy place with some protection from the rain and they will always burn beautifully!
